U2.COM : 'A KIND OF FAMILY...'

A Kind of Family...'
'U2 is a kind of family. U2 is a brotherhood. Although there are a lot of sisters in it now that I think about it. The extended family are everything to us, We look after each other. Last night we lost a member of our family...'

An extraordinary and moving show at The Forum in Los Angeles as the band paid tribute to their great friend and longtime colleague.

'Dennis Sheehan was his name,' explained Bono introducing Iris, a song inspired by the loss of his own mother. 'He was U2's tour manager for 33 years and he loved, as we all do, the city of Los Angeles…he called the Sunset Marquis his home away from home, he came to this city as a young man working for Led Zeppelin. In fact he always hoped we would be the next Led Zeppelin which of course is impossible...'

Set on honouring what they knew would be Dennis' wish, the band not only played the show as scheduled, they performed with a singular passion - and the 18,000 people in the audience lifted the roof with their singing.

The set list was switched up again, with several songs dedicated to Dennis including Every Breaking Wave, a transcendent version of 'Bad' and With Or Without You.

'Goodnight Dennis Sheehan...'

Perhaps the most touching moment of all came right at the end of a poignant and powerful evening. Edge pulled on the acoustic bass, Adam switched to electric guitar and the opening chords of '40' began ringing round the arena.
Based on the biblical fortieth psalm, the song was written for the band's third studio album 'War', released in 1983, the year that their friendship with Dennis began.

'I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
How long to sing this song
How long to sing this song
How long, how long, how long
How long to sing this song....'

comment: U2's longtime tour manager Dennis Sheehan passed away after the previous night's concert. The tour debut of 40, this concert, and the whole tour were dedicated to his memory; Bono spoke extensively about Sheehan before both Iris and 40. Bad's performance was spontaneous; no song was listed on the printed setlist between Beautiful Day and With Or Without You.

U2.COM : DENNIS SHEEHAN 1946-2015

- "We've lost a family member, we're still taking it in. He wasn't just a legend in the music business, he was a legend in our band. He is irreplaceable." Bono
- "With profound sadness we confirm that Dennis Sheehan, U2's longstanding tour manager and dear friend to us all, has passed away overnight. Our heartfelt sympathy is with his wonderful family." Arthur Fogel, CEO Global Touring, Chairman Global Music Live Nation Global Touring

U2.COM : GAME CHANGER

Noel Gallagher, currently touring the US with his High Flying Birds, was at the second show in San Jose last night.

Afterwards he spoke to U2.com. Here's what he thought of the show.

'I thought it was as great a leap forward as it was when I saw ZOOTV the first time, which itself was a great leap forward from Rattle and Hum. If it's at all possible to get a great leap forward from that, then tonight was it.

It was theatre.

It starts off as a punk rock gig but then it gets intimate, there's a lot of truth in it about where they come from and the people that they are.

At points it's quite touching when you see footage of people like Bono's mum and his kids, stuff like that, walking up the street they grew up on.

Visually the band were explaining it to me for a good six months but I still had no idea about this screen they were talking about, it didn't make much sense to me at all - most things don't with Bono at four o clock in the morning. But tonight, I don't like to use the phrase, but this is a game changer, not only for them but for shows in general. It is something competely different.

You don't expect to have that screen in that position and doing that thing... and the beauty of it all is that it still does not take away from what a great band they are.

It was always going to be a contentious thing what they did with the album release but I think it paid off tonight because the stories of the songs have been told visually and it works, I really do think it works in a visual sense.

For people who haven't seen it, they play inside of a video screen and it's something else, it's like watching a television but you kind of forget sometimes that they are actually there on stage and they are playing live. It's a psychedelic experience.

I've been a fan since hearing 'New Year's Day' in 1983 and I've seen them loads of time. With the greatest respect in the world when I saw the 360° Tour I thought that was the end of something, and not in a bad way. I thought, this is so staggering and huge and tall, so amazing, I thought this was the end of something and I wondered what the beginning of the next thing will be - and here it is.

It was staggering - and only the fourth show. I can't wait to see it again.'

comment: When Love Comes To Town is performed for the first time since 28 August 1993; it is performed in honour of the recently deceased BB King and at the end Bono paid tribute to him, remarking that "the thrill will never be gone". Miracle Drug is performed for the first time since 28 November 2005. Tour debuts by Angel Of Harlem, Bad, California, and One. A few times during the show, Bono made light of Edge taking a tumble offstage during the last song of the previous night's show. He referred to U2's controversial distribution of Songs Of Innocence with his quip that "Edge downloaded himself into the audience without permission".

U2.COM : 'VISUALLY STUNNING'

U2’s return to the concert stage tonight, for the opening show on their ‘iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE’ world tour, was nothing short of a triumph.

The band delighted the crowd of 19,000 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver with more than two hours of brilliant musicianship, illuminated by one of the most visually stunning rock productions ever mounted.

No fewer than seven tracks from last year’s ‘Songs of Innocence’ album were let loose on an audience for the first time, from the opening ‘The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)’ onwards. Every one was passionately delivered and warmly received among a compendium of the band’s most celebrated anthems.

The band reached all the way back to their earliest days on record by moving from that new opener to ‘I Will Follow,’ from 1980’s ‘Boy’ debut. A cleverly-sequenced set offered staples from all chapters of the U2 songbook, from ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ and ‘Pride (In The Name Of Love)’ to ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Desire,’ alongside fresh additions such as the moving ‘Iris (Hold Me Close)’ and ‘Raised By Wolves.’

What gave an explosion of colour to the entire proceedings was the technological masterpiece of a giant construction suspended above the walkway connecting the main and “b” stages. Known thus far within the touring operation as the “divider,” it looks like a fence but serves as a superbly versatile backdrop for animated and filmic visuals, with giant images of the band, moving in real time, projected onto it to give an entirely new dimension.

Double-sided, with space for Bono to work his presence in its corridor, the construction filled the entire arena and helped convey a truly surround-sound presence all the way to the back row.

'Technology can be fun,' as the frontman said himself.

The main set ended on ‘With Or Without You,’ but there were four more treats in store, with a brightly-lit angular set design for the encore that was launched, appropriately, with ‘City Of Blinding Lights.’ Clearly elated to be back in their element, the band sprinted for home with ‘Beautiful Day,’ ‘Where The Streets Have No Name’ and ‘I Still Haven't Found What I’m Looking For,’ as Vancouver roared its approval.

'I love you, and you know that' - Larry Mullen Jnr pays emotional tribute to dad at funeral mass

LM3.jpg

Larry Snr passed away at the age of 92 in the Bon Secours Hospital in Glasnevin on Sunday after a short illness.

Today his remains were walked from his home on Rosemount Avenue in Artane the short distance to Our Lady of Mercy Church, with Larry Jnr (53) carrying the coffin with other family members.
Larry jnr's bandmates are rehearsing for the opening gig of their new world tour at the moment, and in his eulogy he thanked them and the U2 crew for helping him make it home from Vancouver in Canada for the funeral before he flies back to join them on stage.
"Nice one on the timing dad," Larry smiled from the altar as he described how his father had been sick only for a short time but was a man who was "truly ready to go".

“He wasn’t sick very long, however he received bad news on Friday. He decided to exit his mortal coil on Sunday,” Larry explained.
"I had an opportunity to speak to him on Saturday and he was overwhelmed by the care, love and support shown to him," he added.
He said his father had spent his adolescence in a seminary before leaving in the 12th month of his final year at the age of 21, followed by ten years of wanderlust trying to readjust.
“Then meeting my mother, who was herself orphaned, and by all accounts complicated,” said Larry.
“They had three children quickly in their marriage. They lost their youngest daughter Mary at nine, followed four or five years later by the death of his wife, devastating the life of Larry,” he added.
“To my dad, I just want to acknowledge that there are no regrets between us. I love you, and you know that. No regrets,” he ended.
Today was also the monthly poetry day in the church. An event that Larry Snr regularly participated in.
Before the funeral mass the mourners were told that the event was cancelled as a mark of respect.
Larry Jnr’s sister Cecelia also spoke at the mass, saying her father was a private man, but a family man.
“This has come as a huge shock to our family,” she said, adding that he was an extraordinary man.

U2 @ Jimmy Fallon videos!!!

U2.COM : 'JUST A COUPLE OF SCRATCHES...'

'Bono gets back on a bike for the first time since his accident...'
In case you missed it - from The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

U2.COM : FIVE THINGS WE CAN'T TELL YOU...

Some of the U2.com team have arrived in Vancouver and we’d love to tell you what they’ve seen and heard from the heart of production rehearsals. But if we did we'd all be fired. It's all under wraps until  Friday.
So here’s five things we can’t tell you.
Every few years the band and their production team reinvent the idea of live performance. How do they do this? Simple. By doing something no-one has done before. Remember ZOO TV? Or PopMart ? Remember the club show at the heart of the Elevation Tour ? Or the 360 spaceship? For iNNOCENCE & eXPERIENCE they’ve done it again. You’ve never seen a show like this.
There is a lightbulb.
For two months band and production team have been working on the show at a secret Vancouver location… which everyone in the city knows about. If rehearsals are closed, the odd familiar melody has escaped the building, sending fans into  paroxysms of online speculation.
Last night we sat in on a run-through of a show. First hearing of live tracks from Songs of Innocence? We're biased... but it was thrilling. We also counted songs from eight of U2's twelve other studio albums. And three never released on studio albums. Got you thinking? Be warned. It will all have changed by next week.
If U2360 was on a scale never before seen in rock’n’roll, becoming the most popular tour in history, #U2ie takes the band in a different direction. Stadiums to arenas. Outdoors to indoors. Boy to Songs of Innocence. This is a show with a powerful story. As Adam says, ‘It’s been a long walk from I to E’.
What’s the show about and where does it come from?  ‘From innocence, from experience and from a whole lot of rock’n’roll.’ That’s how show director Willie Williams puts it in the tour book… which we’re not supposed to have seen.

U2 Plays Surprise Show On NYC Subway Platform

Travelers through New York City's Grand Central Station were treated to a surprise performance by U2 on Monday as the band recorded a segment for "The Tonight Show."
Members of the band at first wore disguises, including wigs, with drummer Larry Mullen Jr. even beating on upside down buckets instead of drums to complete the effect:
Eventually, the disguises came off and the band led the crowd in a sing-along of their 1988 hit "Angel of Harlem," from the "Rattle and Hum" album (although it should be noted that Grand Central is 65 blocks from Harlem itself):
Earlier this week, Fallon and Bono were spotted apparently recreating the November 2014 bicycle accident that left the singer so severely injured that he had to postponewhat was supposed to be a weeklong residency for the band on "The Tonight Show." Bono reportedly has trouble playing the guitar even five months after the crash.
