Do you think Matt Andersen’s booming voice and monster guitar skills should earn him a spot as one of the opening acts for the U2 concert in Moncton this summer?
About 1,000 people have joined a Facebook group that’s lobbying concert promoters to add the talented singer-songwriter to the lineup for the July 30 concert.
So far, acclaimed Montreal indie-rock superstars Arcade Fire and an up-and-coming New York group called Carney are the only acts booked to support the Irish touring sensations when they take the stage at Magnetic Hill.
The effort has been organized by Barbara Bovaird – a Prince Edward Island teacher and graduate from the University of New Brunswick who has been enjoying Andersen’s music for years.
Soon after the details of the U2 concert were announced, she launched a social media campaign called Let’s Put Matt Andersen on Stage with U2, in the hopes of having the big man added to the show.
Bovaird said there are several reasons for why she’s working to help Andersen and his management team lock down an appearance at the massive Maritime music event.
“Everyone has their own reasons for this – he deserves it, or it’s New Brunswick (so there should be an artist from the province featured),” she said.
“My angle on this is that he’s good enough to be on that stage.”
She said she understands that her campaign may not be enough to secure him the gig, but she knows that being able to demonstrate public support could play a significant role in swaying the decision-makers.
“I think it’s going to take a bit of effort on many different levels – from the fans, the promoters, (government funding partners),” she said.
“But I think it could happen. For our fan page, it’s all about getting it out there. We’re going to hit 1,000 (supporters) in a week.”
Bovaird, who frequently travels around the Maritimes to see Andersen on stage, said she’s been a big believer since the first time she saw him perform, adding that anyone who is unfamiliar with his music or his live performances is missing something special.
“You’ve got to see him. You can’t explain it and you can’t describe it without sounding a little ridiculous,” she said.
“I’ve said to people, ‘You’ve never seen a guy play guitar like him,’ and they’ve been to lots of concerts and they say, ‘Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.’ But when he comes out and plays, they turn to you and say, ‘Yeah, you’re right.’ ”
Andersen, who has been busy playing shows in the meantime, is, not surprisingly, open to the idea.
“All I need is 20 minutes,” he said. “I’ll rock the place.”
Bovaird said she’s hoping popular U2 frontman Bono hears about the campaign.
“If you put them in a room together, I don’t think Bono would want to leave until he’d heard him play everything he could,” she said.
“They just have to give him the chance.”
