Now U2 could own a piece of Retford's rock history

AN AUCTION will give people a chance to get their hands on a piece of rock – and Retford – history.
The opportunity has arrived to buy one of Retford's more recognisable buildings, the Porterhouse on Carolgate, which in its heyday played host to some of the most influential bands of the time.
Despite being off the beaten tour circuit for most bands, the Porterhouse nightclub in the late 1970s and early 80s, gained a reputation as a venue for bands such as AC/DC, Motorhead, The Damned and The Clash, to name but a few.
Incorporating two floors of night time entertainment, the lower floor attracted disco fans with the upper floor hosting bands and artists.
It was the place for those who wanted to see the likes of New Order, Psychedelic Furs, Eurythmics, The Specials, The Jam, Ultravox, Soft Cell and many more, without travelling to Nottingham, Sheffield or Doncaster.
In 1980 U2 played the Porterhouse in the first leg of the "Boy" tour.
Klair Hill, of Auction House Drewery and Wheeldon ,said: "If you still haven't found what you're looking for, this may be the one.
"This building lends itself to a variety of alternative uses, subject to necessary consents."
The former nightclub will be going under the hammer on Tuesday, March 8, with a guide price of £60,000 – £90,000 for auction.
