U2 mega-concert site construction on schedule

The outdoor stadium set to play host to the highest grossing tour in history has taken one more step closer to completion this week.

The steel construction that will hold nearly 29,000 seats is getting closer and closer to being completed as the July 30 tour date draws near.

"The steel structure is getting close to completion. The seats of aluminum still need to go up," says Patrick Wafer, superintendent for Tower Events, the company in charge of the seating provided for the Magnetic Hill concert.

Wafer wants to be finished the seats by the time work on the stage begins later this month.

"We need to be out of the way by the time the stage goes up, and we're working hard to do that."

Wafer is one of many tasked with bringing the site to life who is pleased with progress so far.

"They started the construction June 20, and they're cruising right along," says Shane Porter, manager of venues for the City of Moncton.

"When you're building approximately 29,000 seats, it doesn't happen quick. This is a significant build."

The seats themselves are currently in Montreal, but should be making their way to the hub city soon enough.

"The seats are coming mid-week next week, and everything is timed so the build can continue right on through," says Porter.

"This is by far the largest thing we've done here. U2 is designed for larger venues, but by erecting this we can emulate their usual venues."

Porter is still in disbelief that the supergroup will be making a stop in Moncton.

"I didn't think they'd land here, but they came with a lot of planning on everyone's part," says Porter.

"The promoters and touring people are amazing at planning. They are masters at this," he says.

Porter urges those who want to go but who are stalling on purchasing tickets to do so immediately.

"Tickets are still available, but sales are picking up with the nice weather," says Porter.

"This is the last day of the largest tour in history. People don't want to miss out."

Tickets for the July 30 U2 show in Moncton, also featuring Arcade Fire and Carney, are still on sale. Reserved grandstand seats are $99.50 and $199.50, while general admission tickets are $65 each.

All tickets include taxes but are subject to applicable service charges.

You can purchase all tickets online at www.Ticketmaster.ca and www.Livenation.com with some general admission tickets available at Needs Convenience Stores across Atlantic Canada, the Moncton Coliseum Box Office or by phone at 1-888-720-5600.
