Bono and Edge accept Academy membership

Bono and The Edge have accepted membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an Academy spokesperson has confirmed. A total of 135 "artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" were invited to join the organization, whose members select Oscar nominees and winners. New members will be welcomed during a ceremony this month in Beverly Hills. Bono and Edge will not be attending the reception, the spokesperson said.

A press release noted Bono and Edge's songwriting work for the films Gangs of New York, In the Name of the Father and GoldenEye. All the members of U2 were nominated for a best original song Oscar in 2002 for "The Hands That Built America" from Gangs of New York, but Larry and Adam weren't on the 2010 invitee list. Others who received invitations in the music category this year were composers T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart), Christophe Beck (The Hangover) and Brian Tyler (Fast & Furious).
