Larry Mullen Jr. Cut from Cleveland Show

Contrary to previous reports, Larry Mullen Jr. won't be appearing on the Fox TV animated comedy, The Cleveland Show. A Fox PR person confirmed via e-mail that Larry did record voice-overs, but won't be on the show: "Larry Mullen Jr is not going to be a guest star on The Cleveland Show.... His scene was cut for time."
As we reported back in February, Larry had asked to be involved in the show and recorded a couple different characters for different episodes. According to the BBC, Larry had voiced a mobster in one episode and a "bad Elvis impersonator" for another. The Fox spokesperson didn't say if there's any chance that Larry's appearance could be used in future seasons.

KILLING BONO: U2 CAN HAVE A FILM MADE ABOUT YOU

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3:
3pm:
It started with a book: I Was Bono’s Doppelganger. It ended in Killing Bono, a title suggested by the U2 lead singer himself, for a movie that is ready to take the world by storm. But what are the challenges of making films about real characters – including the biggest rock band in the world? What is it like to have your identity stolen, to be be turned into a fictional character? And how do you write music now for a band back then that believed it was ready to take on the world?

Paul McGuinnes interview Part II 'Has To Be Spectacular'

'They've always understood that you can't invite people to a place as big as this and give them nothing to look at except some black boxes at one end of the field - it has to be spectacular.'

Billionaire chairman Barry Diller quits as concert revenues slump

Madonna, Jay-Z and U2 hailed it as the saviour of the music industry. Desperate investors hoped it would prove you could still make money in an era of rampant music piracy. Concert-goers might have winced at soaring ticket prices, but it seemed they would continue to flock to its venues. A cadre of the most powerful moguls in entertainment dreamed of recasting the industry and making a fortune.

ONE.ORG - New report highlights what the Global Fund ‘means to Africans’

As pledges for the Global Fund’s replenishment meeting stream in this week, Friends Africa released their third edition of “What the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Means to Africans” (PDF).
We hope that the publication — which chronicles stories from African individuals and communities who are positively impacted by the Global Fund and features real voices from patients on the ground — inspires countries to donate to the Fund before the replenishment meeting on October 4.
It’s still not too late to tell President Obama to commit $6 billion over the next three years. Together, we can ensure that no child is born with HIV by 2015.

A handful of new songs have already premiered on the current European dates and in San Sebastian, Spain earlier in the week there was another surprise - the 360 debut for the rarely performed 'Spanish Eyes'.

Originally written and recorded during the sessions for The Joshua Tree, Spanish Eyes was released as a b-side to 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' in 1987.

And every now and again, just when you're not expecting it, the band bring it out on stage again... Wey, hey, hey...

Angel of Harlem over Belgium

'Where are we going? Antwerp? Bruges? Brussels?' The answer (you guessed already) was Brussels and the scene could hardly have offered a greater contrast than last night's show.
The warm, late-summer sun had gone, replaced by torrential rain and thunderstorms as afternoon turned in to evening and just when we thought we were going to get to dry out - around about the start of Until The End of the World - the rain returned. And didn't let up all night long.
No problem, 60,000 people were soon chorusing 'Singing in the Rain'. 'Thanks for making us feel at home with this Irish weather,' remarked Bono. 'Let's give it up for the U2 crew, the hardest working crew on the planet and not all of them Belgians..'

September 23, 2010 at Brussels, Belgium

Venue: Roi Baudouin Stadium

Opening Act(s): Interpol
Main Set: Return of the Stingray Guitar, Beautiful Day, New Year's Day, Get On Your Boots, Magnificent, Mysterious Ways - Private Dancer, Elevation, Until the End of the World - Singin' In The Rain, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Angel of Harlem, Bad - Singin' In The Rain, In a Little While, Miss Sarajevo, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo - It's Only Rock and Roll, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (remix) - Relax - Life During Wartime, Pride, MLK, Walk On
Encore(s): One - Rain, Where the Streets Have No Name, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, With or Without You, Moment Of Surrender - Singin' In The Rain

Comments: The video screen requires some minor repair right before the show begins, but that doesn't slow down another terrific show. Nor does more rain, which leads to several weather-related snippets. Angel of Harlem is played for the first time since July 25, 2009. And Bad reappears for the first time since Sept. 12, 2009. Bono praises Joe O'Herlihy -- today is the 32-year anniversary of his first concert as U2's sound man. With or Without You includes a bit of the rare 'Shine like stars' coda.

'Run By Belgians'

'This doesn't feel like a Wednesday night,' says Bono, after Until The End of the World. 'This is a very special occasion. You thought we were an Irish band  and we are. You thought we had an Irish crew and we do… but actually this tour is run by Belgians.'

U2 manager Paul McGuinness still hates Internet service providers.

McGuinness made that clear in 2008 when he addressed the MIDEM conference in France. He reiterated his concerns in an article he wrote for the U.K. version of GQ magazine.
The manager argues that ISPs have made a lot of money off the backs of musicians by providing illegal material, such as free music files.
The ISPs should share their windfall profits with the artists, McGuinness says, and, if they don’t, governments should institute laws like the ones passed in France, England, South Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand that try to level the playing ground for musicians.

Encore(s): One, Amazing Grace - Where the Streets Have No Name, Ultraviolet, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender

Comments: Bono calls the show a 'homecoming' for U2, what with several crew members hailing from Belgium, not to mention this being where The Claw was first built in the spring of 2009. The audience is loud throughout the show, and they continue singing With or Without You so long that Bono can't begin Moment of Surrender.

U2 in space and on tour with NASA!

A year's worth of collaboration between NASA and U2 both in space and on the Irish rock band's "360" world tour is highlighted in a new video produced by the group. In 2009, U2 approached NASA with the idea to include the crew of the International Space Station in its shows, and the astronauts agreed to participate in this unique experience. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. spoke with the Expedition 20 crew on the space station several times before the astronauts recorded a video segment that U2 incorporated into its concerts. The crew members include Michael Barratt of NASA, Frank De Winne of the European Space Agency, Bob Thirsk of the Canadian Space Agency, Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and Gennady Padalka and Roman Romanenko of the Russian Federal Space Agency.

Bill Carter's Miss Sarajevo excerpt

'Here she comes...'

In 1993 Bill Carter was an aid-worker and documentary film maker living in Sarajevo, a city under siege from 18,000 Serbian troops firing artillery and mortar from the surrounding hills. Even though it was cut off from the rest of the world Carter saw the city as a sign of hope in the Balkan war because 'Sarajevans refused to be divided along ethnic lines.'

Paul McGuinness on U2 - 'Hunger for Contact'

The first time he ever saw U2 play live there was a crew of one.

'It's all got a bit more complicated,' says U2's manager.

In the first part of an interview for U2.com subscribers, Paul McGuinness recalls life on the road. Being on stage, he says, was always 'fundamental to being the band.'

Set to move into their new Little Havana facility in 2012, the Marlins won't play all 81 home games at Sun Life. An alternate venue is being sought for the June 24-26 interleague series against the Seattle Mariners because of the June 29 U2 concert.

Ireland's Greates!

At the end of 2009 Ipsos/ MRBI, the independent market research agency, conducted a survey amongst a nationally representative sample of Irish respondents aged 15+.
Quotas were set by gender, age, social class and region to ensure a representative sample of the population was achieved. Eligibility was based on Irish Citizenship rules and in the interests of balance & fairness, serving politicians and RTÉ personalities were excluded from the survey.
On Monday March 22nd the top 40 names from this survey were put up on the RTÉ website (in alphabetical order), and people were then given the chance to vote for their greatest Irish person from that Top 40.
Two weeks later, the web vote closed and the Top Ten was announced. They were (in alphabetical order): Bono, Dr. Noel Browne, Michael Collins, James Connolly, Stephen Gately, John Hume, Phil Lynott, Padraig Pearse, Mary Robinson and Adi Roche.
Now, after thousands of public votes on the RTE Website, the search for Ireland's Greatest has been narrowed down to the final five: Bono, Michael Collins, James Connolly, John Hume and Mary Robinson.

M.D.G.'s for Beginners ... and Finishers

New York Times, September 18, 2010
By: Bono

I've noticed that New Yorkers, and I sometimes try to pass for one these days, tend to greet the word "summit" with an irritated roll of the eyes, a grunt, an impatient glance at the wristwatch. In Manhattan, a summit has nothing to do with crampons and ice picks, but refers instead to a large gathering of important persons, head-of-state types and their rock-star retinues in the vicinity of the United Nations building and creates, therefore, a near total immobilization of the East Side. Can world peace possibly be worth this? Never, never...Eleanor Roosevelt, look what you've done ... .

U2 Reportedly Reissuing 'Achtung Baby'

U2360 – Stade de France – Paris, France

As per usual in Paris, entry to the stadium is chaotic. Gates fail to open simultaneously and according to some reports some people get hurt. In the afternoon the band soundchecks Pride, Streets, All I Want is You, Mercy and Desire. The concert is sold out and there are a lot of people around the stadium still looking for tickets. The weather is good… a dry show for a change.

Once you have made up your mind click on the vote button and have your say. Don't forget to tune into The Tubridy Show for more information.
The Top 5, as nominated by voters, will then become the subject of one of five brand new hour-long documentaries, each charting the individual's impact and contribution to Irish life, as interpreted and championed by a well-known personality. This series of documentaries will be broadcast this September on RTÉ One. Once these documentaries have aired, the public will again be given the opportunity to reassess which person actually deserves the accolade of Ireland's Greatest.

Boy falls from the sky

Reeve Carney sang the song “Boy Falls from the Sky” from Bono and the Edge’s Spider-man musical on Good Morning America this Friday. Carney will play Peter Parker on Broadway.

Listen to Bono sing the same song here (clip #2)

Edge Stands Up To Cancer

The Edge performed a guitar solo via pre-recorded video on tonight's Stand Up To Cancer telethon as Stevie Wonder, Martina McBride, Dave Stewart, Natasha Beddingfield and Aaron Neville performed "Unchained Melody" live on stage. Edge is very familiar with this song as U2 recorded it as a B-side for the "All I Want Is You" single, and performed it a number of times live. This is not the first time Edge and Dave Stewart collaborated during a telethon. Stewart joined U2 for "Walk On" nine years ago on the "America: A Tribute To Heroes" telethon that was also broadcast across several television stations.

Bono and Edge accept Academy membership

Bono and The Edge have accepted membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an Academy spokesperson has confirmed. A total of 135 "artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" were invited to join the organization, whose members select Oscar nominees and winners. New members will be welcomed during a ceremony this month in Beverly Hills. Bono and Edge will not be attending the reception, the spokesperson said.

A press release noted Bono and Edge's songwriting work for the films Gangs of New York, In the Name of the Father and GoldenEye. All the members of U2 were nominated for a best original song Oscar in 2002 for "The Hands That Built America" from Gangs of New York, but Larry and Adam weren't on the 2010 invitee list. Others who received invitations in the music category this year were composers T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart), Christophe Beck (The Hangover) and Brian Tyler (Fast & Furious).

'Quintessentially New York...'

'A quintessential New York story ...'

That's how Bono described 'Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark' as he and Edge joined Julie Taymor on Good Morning America to talk about the upcoming Broadway production.

'My Mind Was Blown...'

Gary Lightbody of the very fine Snow Patrol recorded us a brief farewell speech ahead of the show in Istanbul, the band's 24th and final 360 show.

The band were in Barcelona for the opening night of the tour and they've turned up more than anyone else ever since.

'From the first night my mind was blown when I saw U2 onstage under that spaceship," says Gary. 'We've been on it for a year now and it never ever got boring. I've never enjoyed a tour as much as I have this one...'

Looks like the feeling was mutual: when Gary and Snow Patrol took to the stage in Istanbul, Stage Manager Rocko Reedy and the crew had a little surprise in store.

U2 To Rock Heinz Field

KDKA, September 09, 2010
By: Andy Sheehan

After months of behind-the-scenes negotiations, sources say U2 has decided to end their two-year world tour "360" in Pittsburgh.

The venue – Heinz Field on the North Shore.

Heinz Field had been trying to book U2 all along, but until recently the band had no plans of playing here, deciding to end its tour in Minneapolis on July 23, 2011.

But Pittsburgh had a powerful ally – U.S. Ambassador to Ireland and former Steelers chairman Dan Rooney.

Sources say it was Rooney's influence that convinced the band to add one more date to the tour and play right here in Pittsburgh.

U2's Bono, ErdoÄŸan converge on interfaith project

Today's Zaman, September 09, 2010

Bono, who was in Ä°stanbul as part of his band's "360 degree" world tour, reportedly told the prime minister that Ä°stanbul occurred to him to be an ideal host location. ErdoÄŸan revealed the details of his conversation with Bono while making an appearance on a television program.

"They said they wanted to organize something with the Abrahamic religions -- Christianity, Islam and Judaism. He said that he wanted to do it in Jerusalem, but it might not be safe. I said: ‘What are you waiting for? Do it in Ä°stanbul'," ErdoÄŸan explained. "He said that Ä°stanbul had just occurred to him as well. Another member [of the band] suggested Cordoba."

Good Morning America, Friday

This Friday, Edge and Bono will appear on Good Morning America as part of the creative team for Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark directed by Julie Taymor. They have taken on the role of composers and lyricists for the production.

U2 have appeared on a number of soundtracks and won a Golden Globe for 'The Hands That Built America'. Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry have worked together and separately on these types of projects in the past - many of you will remember Larry and Adam's soundtrack for Mission Impossible and Bono and Edge's musical score for A Clockwork Orange for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1990.

Edge and Bono will appear live via satellite on Good Morning America this Friday to discuss this new Broadway production, Julie Taymor will also appear in the segment.

The first song from 'Spider-Man Turn off the Dark' is set to premiere, performed by Peter Parker/Spiderman (Reeve Carney),  live at The Hudson Theatre in Times Square.

Remembering Fehmi Tosun

Before the show last night the band met with Hanim, widow of Fehmi Tosun, an ethnic Kurd who was taken into custody in 1995 on his way to work and never seen again.

Fehmi's plight was highlighted by the band on 1997's 'Pop' and last night, joined onstage by Turkish singer Zulfu Livaneli, they performed 'Mothers of the Disappeared' in tribute. The  song was originally inspired by a trip to El Salvador where Bono met  mothers of people who had been 'disappeared'. Hanim and her own children are still fighting for Fehmi's legacy.

Also joining Hanim and the band is Salil Shetty, the new Secretary General of Amnesty International.

Earlier, U2's crew joined Snow Patrol on stage for 'Chasing Cars' - it's the last time Snow Patrol opens for U2 this year. The stadium is reportedly only a little more than half full.
