Press Conference to Announce ‘Biggest Musical Event Coming to Nashville in Years’ Monday at Vanderbilt [It's U2, Y'all]

HELLO!!! HELLO!!! That's right, Nashville. Come July 2, we will indeed shine like stars in the summer night. Just after an inside source — yeah, we've got those — confirmed with the Scene yesterday that U2’s massive 360 Tour is indeed set to stop at our own Vanderbilt Stadium, we received a “media alert” from Live Nation inviting us to Vanderbilt — or as I call it, West End High — to partake in a press conference Monday afternoon announcing “THE BIGGEST MUSIC EVENT COMING TO NASHVILLE IN YEARS.”
Dropping a hint as to what that may be, the press release opens by saying “IT'S BEEN 29 YEARS.” If you saw this little item I posted last week reporting rumors of a U2 show at Vandy, then you might recall my mentioning that the band hasn’t performed in Nashville proper since the winter of 1981. Southcomm’s resident rennaissance reporter Tom Wood elaborated on that show in the post’s comment thread by recalling that the band played in the law school’s roughly 500-capacity Underwood Auditorium and were supported a “bunch of UGa folk called R.E.M.”
Boy, I’ll bet THAT show was good.
Another thing you might recall from last week’s U2 trumor post was that I expressed surprise over the world’s biggest band booking the world’s biggest tour at Vanderbilt Stadium as opposed to the significantly larger LP Field — where a non-country artist has NEVER headlined a concert. Obviously I — per usual — was a little off in my skeptical speculations, as this show is now a surefire reality (unless the press conference is just to announce Dave Matthews' triumphant return to the stadium and the U2 rumor was all just an elaborate way of pwning me and getting me back for this). Perhaps U2 and Live Nation will pay to bulldoze a dorm building or, maybe more likely, the Sarratt Student Center to make room for all the trucks needed to haul around U2’s 170-ton monument to expense, excess and circumference, “The Claw.” Last year the band was forced to pay $2 million to lift the 60-yard-wide HD screen at Cowboy Stadium when they came to Dallas, so is it really such a stretch to think they’d overtake the student center? I mean, it is home to WRVU. Perhaps I’ve just uncovered the conspiracy? Perhaps Vanderbilt is selling WRVU and the Student Center to help clear space for storing Bono’s collection of wrap-around shades or The Edge’s flight cases full of hairline-hiding beanies?
According to the press release announcing the announcement of the concert, the details will “be announced Monday.” Don't to be surprised to learn that the concert is scheduled for July 2, 2011. Don't be surprised to learn that the opening act will probably be either Florence and the Machine or Interpol. Don't be surprised to learn that tickets will range in price from $30-$250. Don’t be surprised to learn that they’ll probably go on sale next weekend or sometime the week following. And don’t be surprised if I get dangerously excited and start ending all my posts with the line "How long to write this blog?" repeating.
