Bono’s mystery woman a busy doctor

Shahra & Bono
A mystery woman who shared the stage with U2’s Bono during his Cape Town concert has been identified. She is a young doctor working in the field of HIV and TB and passionate about the causes that Bono promotes.
“It was an unbelievable experience. Bono got down on his knees, pointed at me – and said ‘You’. Then I was lifted onto the stage,” said Shahra Sattar this week.
The U2 singer danced with Shahra as he performed two songs.
Shahra, who works for the Stellenbosch University-affiliated Desmond Tutu TB Centre, had been waving a banner with “HIV Positive Music” written on it. She believes that may have been why she was singled out from the 72 000-strong crowd.
Shahra has always admired Bono’s work as an activist, including his Red Campaign which channels funding to fight Aids, TB and malaria in Africa.
“I’ve always loved him as a singer… but then I became a doctor… and he went from being my favourite singer to being my hero because of his activism.”
Shahra, who has recently won a scholarship to the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, heads the Zamstar study (a Zambia and South Africa TB and Aids study) for the Desmond Tutu TB Centre.
During the concert Bono praised the work of Zachie Achmat and the Treatment Action Campaign.
A message from Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the patron of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, was also beamed to the crowd.
