Amazon Germany Lists New U2 Album

Via our friends at U2tour.de comes news that Amazon's German store has added a listing for a new U2 album. There's no title -- just a generic "new album 2011" -- but the listing shows a May 27, 2011 release date.
That may or may not be correct, but it does match up with what Paul McGuiness said last November when U2 360 arrived in New Zealand:
"We are trying very hard to use this time in New Zealand and Australia to finish an album that will be released in the spring," he said.

McGuinness said while the band were not actually recording in New Zealand, they were working hard on the finishing touches.

"It's not so much recording as editing and polishing up lyrics and trying to getting it done by the date it needs to be delivered to the record company for release in May. It's sounding great: lots of hits."
You can keep track of all the news and info about U2's next album(s) on our new U2 album page.

U2 band member's Malibu housing project hits snag

"The Edge" wants to build five ridge-top homes in the mountains above Malibu, but the California Coastal Commission staff says the project would violate state law by ruining a wild area and scarring hillsides visible from Pacific Coast Highway.

In an analysis released late Friday, the commission's staff said the 156- acre project north of Malibu's landmark pier would violate the Coastal Act in several aspects.

Bono Speaks at World Economic Forum - Davos 2011 (video)

U2.COM : Which Song? (video)

Bono : M. le Président, get things done !

M. le Président is not lacking in energy. This week he will sprint from the World Economic Forum in Davos to the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa without breaking his stride or, one imagines, even breaking a sweat. There is some strange fuel that drives him… could he himself be a nuclear power? Is this fission that's happening inside his reactor?? Should the IAEA send a delegation to the Palais d'Elysee?

U2 plans summer concert in Moncton

The iconic rock band U2 will headline a music festival at Moncton's Magnetic Hill outdoor concert venue in the summer, sources have told CBC News.

Moncton's Magnetic Hill has attracted bands such as the Rolling Stones and AC/DC in the past.

Although the city won't confirm the band's involved in the summer festival, sources connected to U2 have confirmed to CBC News that the band will perform in Moncton.

Best Bets: U2 360 Tour

The band is on track to break all-time gross record

[The January 29, 2011 issue of Billboard magazine includes a feature called "2011's Top 40 Best Bets." U2 is listed 11th with this accompanying article.]

In early April, while the group is performing somewhere in Latin America, U2's 360 tour is projected to become the highest-grossing tour off all time.

The previous record-high gross of $558 million, set by the Rolling Stones' A Bigger Bang tour of 2005-07, won't just be broken but, to quote the Stones, shattered. When U2 concludes its two-year, 110-show trek in North America in July, the 360 tour is projected to top $700 million in total gross and 7 million in attendance. The feat is even more remarkable when one considers that the band will break the record on a tour that spanned trying economic times around the globe.

Website launches for Man On The Train

Pembridge Pictures has launched a website for Man On The Train, the upcoming film that features Larry Mullen Jr. in his first acting role (aside from playing himself on screen a couple times). It also tells more about Larry's involvement with the film: the Billing Block page lists Larry as one of the film's producers and says that he's co-composed the original score (with Simon Clime). Larry is also listed as the second actor on the bill after Donald Sutherland. U2 fans with keen eyes will also notice that his longtime partner, Ann Acheson, is listed as an associate producer.
We caught sight of a couple still photos from the film on the Stills page, but those have been removed today. Other pages (Production Notes and Trailer) are un-linked, which suggests the site is still in development.
If this is all new to you, here's our article (with photo) from last April, when Larry was shooting the film in Canada. That should get you up to speed.

David Guetta ‘excited’ about U2 collaboration

David Guetta says the opportunity to work with U2 would be an “honour”.

The French producer-and-DJ was thrilled to meet the band’s frontman Bono recently as he is a huge fan of the Irish rock group. He has revealed he is in talks to produce some tracks for U2’s new album and he hopes the plans will come to fruition soon. Although David is known for releasing successful dance tracks, he is confident he can turn his hand to a rockier sound.
"We met with Bono, and I was really excited, really honoured because he proposed me to maybe produce some tracks for the next U2 album," Guetta told MTV News. "I started a few ideas already, yes."

Sivert Hoyem's latest U2 tweet!!!

Enjoy!!! :))

U2.COM : 'Back In The Van Again'

In the late 1970's this is how U2 got from one show to another - sound man Joe O'Herlihy would drive one van, with two band members in it, while manager Paul McGuinness would drive the other, with another two band members. The kit was rammed in all around them.

Thirty two years since Joe started work with U2, he says it's changed a little: 'e have an aircraft and 186 trucks on this tour'.
But in another way it hasn't changed at all.
'It's all about the same thing - communication - and on this tour the design concept was to shrink the huge stadium to be back in the van again and I believe we've achieved that.'

In the first of a two-part interview for U2.com subscribers, Joe describes how the band took their music into bigger and bigger venues - and how technological advances enabled them to retain intimacy in shows in the biggest stadiums in the world.

Larry Convicted in Civil Suit in Brazil

Larry Mullen has been convicted by a Brazilian court in a civil case that dates back to 2003. The ruling was entered Friday (original in Portuguese and Google translation) and, if I'm reading the judgment correctly, orders Larry to pay $800,000 Brazilian real, which is equal to about $480,000 US dollars.
The case stems from an interview that Bono and Larry did in 2000, in which Larry apparently stated that concert promoter Franco Bruni did not pay the band for U2's concerts in Brazil in 1998. Three days after the interview appeared, Sheila Roche (then of Principle Management) told a Brazilian newspaper that Larry had made a mistake -- that Bruni had paid U2 its concert fees, but hadn't paid the band money related to "author's rights."
The ruling on Friday acquitted Bono, but found Larry, a Brazilian journalist, and the Brazilian media company InfoGlobo all guilty.
The Brazilian fan site U2BR.com reported on this over the weekend (Google translation), so read that for what is probably a better recap of the story. This January 2008 article from Zero Hora (Google translation) also sheds some light on the lawsuit. If you're a member of our @U2 news mailing list, see this post from May 2001, which is the first time we ever reported on the matter. (If you're not a member of our news mailing list, you can join here.)

U2 to rock the Hill this year?

Website says Irish superstars will play at Magnetic Hill on July 30

Every summer, people love to come to our beautiful area at the heart of the Maritimes, especially if the weather’s good. The question for all the out-of-towners reading this is, will you too have a beautiful day this July 30? We only ask because the question everyone in Metro Moncton is asking these days is, “will U2 have a Beautiful Day here at Magnetic Hill this July 30?” At least that’s the question on Facebook and in the streets. There’s nothing new, of course, in there being a rumour about U2 in Moncton going around, but what’s interesting about the latest one is it cites a specific date.

How Adam became the quiet member of U2. . .

Having kept the birth of his first child from public knowledge for a year, Joe O'Shea wonders how Adam Clayton keeps such a low profile

How does Adam Clayton do it? How does he make a living as one-quarter of the biggest rock band on the planet and still remain so enigmatic and under the radar?
The revelation this week that the 50-year-old U2 bassist and his "mystery girlfriend" welcomed a baby boy into their lives almost a year ago surprised all but those closest to Clayton and the band.
As columnists scrambled to get more details on the mother (she is French, aristocratic, independently wealthy and a brunette) the U2 press-office issued a one-line confirmation that, yes, Adam has finally become a father.
And Clayton, the last of the U2 men to enter fatherhood, has decided, for the moment at least, to leave it at that.

Bono : What I Learned From Sargent Shriver

The Irish are still mesmerized by the mythical place that is America, but in the ’60s our fascination got out of hand. I was not old enough to remember the sacrifices of the great generation who saved Europe in the Second World War, or to quite comprehend what was going on in Vietnam. But what I do remember, and cannot forget, is watching a man walk on the moon in 1969 and thinking here is a nation that finds joy in the impossible.

U2.COM : Another Sound Win

The U2360° Tour has won the  award for Best '2010 Tour Sound Production' at the annual TEC (Technical Excellence and Creativity) Awards in Los Angeles.

U2's Joe O'Herlihy won in the category of Front of House Sound Engineer while 360 crew members Alastair McMillan, David Skaff, Richard Rainey and Niall Slevin picked up the award for Monitor Engineers. U2360° Tour partner Clair won Best 'Sound Company'.

The awards are known as 'the Grammy's' within the rock touring production industry and the U2 sound crew were up against talented competition from touring personell working with Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Metallica and James Taylor and Carole King. ML Procise from Clair, who have worked with Joe and U2 for over thirty years, accepted the award on behalf of the 360 Tour.

'It's a fantastic accolade at beginning of the year,' said Joe, when we caught up with him in Dublin. 'These are the awards  made by your peers in the industry and they recognise outstanding creative achievement so it's pretty special for us to win.'

Joe and the U2 crew were also winners in 2002 for the Elevation Tour and in 2005 for Vertigo and he said this win was a special tribute to the 16-strong audio team led by Jo Ravitch, Senior System Engineer.

'This makes it a hat-trick of wins for us but not only is the competition getting tougher every year but  this time, with this 360 tour, we're doing something quite revolutionary which required us to completely rethink how we deliver great sound in the round in stadiums. We're delighted!'

And after a few weeks off, the team are already working on preparations for next months dates in South Africa and those in South America that follow.

'South Africa will be amazing particularly as in Johannesburg we'll be opening in the new stadium where the soccer World Cup Final took place last year. And we always love heading over to South America, the audiences are extraordinary, that latin passion is something we all look forward to. I'll never forget those nights shooting the U23D movie, it'll be great to be back.'

All TEC Winners listed here.

U2 in honor of MLK, Martin Luther King

"Pride (In The Name Of Love)" is an old favorite song which deserves play today on Martin Luther King Day.  The song comes from their career-expanding 1984 album, The Unforgettable Fire.  The album was produced by Brian Eno who encouraged a more atmospheric and ambient sound, a major change in direction for the band.  Their previous three records had been produced by Steve Lillywhite.  The album also featured an elegy to Martin Luther King, called "MLK."
The Unforgettable Fire also marks their long-term collaboration with photographer and director Anton Corbijn.  Corbijn colloborated most notably with Joy Division on the video for the 1988 release of the single "Atmosphere", Echo and the Bunnymen and Depeche Mode.  Corbijn recently directed Control (2007) which was about the band Joy Division and The American (2010).
The lyrics make reference to Jesus being betrayed with a kiss, as well as referring to the assasination of Martin Luther King, Jr.  All came in the name of love.

U2.COM - Dave Fanning interview part II : 'Grounded'

In the second part of our interview with Dave Fanning, he talks in more detail about his longtime friendship with U2 - and the common denominator amongst the many great musicians he has interviewed. (Read the first part of the interview here. )

U2 fund nationwide music scheme

Charity begins at home for rock group U2 after they forked out five million euro to ensure 10,000 youngsters learn music.
The band stumped up the money to bring a pilot scheme nationwide and search for hidden talent.
U2 guitarist The Edge said it was exciting that the group's millions would give so many children an opportunity in music.
"Music is - obviously - the world to us and we were lucky enough to have it at school," he said. "But even if you choose not to make it your job, learning music is proven to have a hugely positive effect on society in general. It's exciting that thousands of Ireland's children and young people will have the opportunity for tuition."
Money from U2, and two million euro from the Ireland Funds, ensures the Music Generation project has enough money to run until 2014.
It is hoped 12 schemes will be set up in separate counties in the next three years teaching thousands of children how to play an instrument or sing.
Music Generation has issued a March 31 deadline for schools, youth clubs, parishes, community groups, councils and other organisations to apply for funding to set up music classes. Some 400 expressions of interest have already been made in relation to classes and teaching.
Rosaleen Molloy, Music Generation director, said the pilot project in Donegal and Ballyfermot, Dublin, was in danger of stalling until the band stepped in.
"U2 have done something very blatant about it and provided the funding," Ms Molloy said. "U2 have set the standard in coming forward in a very generous way."
The Music Generation has already been teaching 1,000 children in Donegal and hundreds more in Ballyfermot. The extended scheme will offer 200,000 euro a year over three years for projects.

Glenn Beck Meets Bono, Raves About Spider-Man Musical Again

Glenn Beck took his devotion for the Spider-Man musical to a whole new level when he met Bono, the co-writer of the show's music, and gave him suggestions for how to retool the show he has called the best he has ever seen.
Beck spoke about the encounter on his radio show Thursday. This came after nearly 30 minutes of discussion about the musical, which Beck has praised to the skies and called "the Eighth Wonder of the World," on his Wednesday show.
Beck said that he went back to see the musical and got a text message during the show, inviting him backstage to meet Bono when it was done.
He duly went, and the two talked, he said, for "like 30 minutes...about the American spirit, and he gets it." Beck was full of praise for Bono, telling him that a song from the musical called "Rise Again" was "the song for today. It's the point I've been trying to make--that you have a choice to make and you can be the hero."
Bono, he said, told him how much he appreciated Beck's mega-raves--not for himself, but for everyone who had worked so hard on the show and who were craving a decent review amidst the continually bad press for the show. Beck also advised Bono on how to retool the show--he wanted a reprise of a big song at the end.
"He put his hand on my shoulder and he pointed to everybody and he said, 'he has to come back Friday,'" Beck said. It turned out that Bono had had the exact same thought, and that there would indeed be a reprise of the song inserted into the show. Beck assured Bono that he would be there.

Achtung baby, Adam is the proud father of a little boy

U2 bassist finally finds what he's looking for with French partner

Adam Clayton has finally found what he's looking for. The U2 bassist is a father. He had a child with a French woman early last year. For years, Adam was the only one in the world-famous band who wasn't a parent.
"I think one of the great things about bands is that they allow you to be irresponsible for longer -- whether or not in the end that's a really healthy position to take," Adam told Q Magazine in 2001.
"I guess I've been lucky in that I fucked about until my mid-30s and now I can have more of a balanced outlook. I think not having a family and kids, I know what I need."
Obviously he changed his opinion last year when his French partner had a baby boy.
According to my source very close to U2, he is deliriously happy with fatherhood. The same source even claimed it is indeed the making of Adam, the one-time bad boy of the group who was once engaged to supermodel Naomi Campbell.

U2 Producer Steve Lillywhite Joins Broadway 'Spider-Man' Web

Steve Lillywhite, the British record producer who has collaborated with U2 on eight albums, has been brought in by Bono and Julie Taymor to work with the performers on the music for the $65 million Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  I'm told that he's been a fixture this week at the Foxwoods Theatre, helping the cast with the songs penned by Bono and The Edge as they prepare for the February 7 opening night of the best musical that Glenn Beck has ever seen.
In Lillywhite, the Spidey cast gets a producer who has working with everyone from Peter Gabriel to the Talking Heads, Dave Matthews Band, and the Rolling Stones. Lillywhite was also in the mix  for a bit to replace Simon Cowell on American Idol.

Black Dub On Mountain Stage

Watch The Interview From Backstage At Mountain Stage

Producer, guitarist and songwriter Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan) first met Trixie Whitley while working with her father, Chris Whitley. Now, Trixie's voice is a focal point of the legendary producer's new collective, Black Dub.
Lanois and Whitley are joined here by world-renowned drummer Brian Blade and bassist James Wilson to perform songs from Black Dub's self-titled debut.
This recording marks Lanois' third appearance on Mountain Stage since 1989, featuring "Sing" and "JJ Leaves L.A.," which were not heard on the radio broadcast. "Agave," referred to by Lanois as a "cinematic" number, appears on his 2008 album, Belladonna. Lanois' latest work with Neil Young, Le Noise, is nominated for several awards, including Best Rock Album, at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
The Black Dub sound is a shimmering blend of dub-inflected rock with bursts of improvisation amid Lanois' signature guitar riffs and Whitley's soulful vocals.

Bono on Les Enfants du Rock in 1987

Here’s an interview that I’ve never seen before. I discovered it over the weekend while researching the book. It’s from the French TV show, Les Enfants du Rock.
The YouTube page says this aired in 1987. I can tell you that it was recorded on June 4, 1986. Bono and the band were in San Francisco on the Amnesty tour and they visited painter Rene Castro that day. Castro took them out for a walk to see one of his murals on Balmy Alley, which is where this was taped.

I do have the Castro visit in the first edition of U2-A Diary, but the TV interview is new to me … so that’ll be added to the second edition via the addendum we’re including. Cool. Happy to find this.

Star Jennifer Damiano Says Bono 'Had a Great Time' Seeing Spider-Man

Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark composer, U2's Bono, paid his first visit to the show on January 4 and the rocker gave Spidey a thumbs-up, according to the musical’s star Jennifer Damiano. “He had a great time and was very positive about the show,” Damiano, who plays Spider-Man's gal pal Mary Jane Watson, told Broadway.com.

Bono and co-composer The Edge had been on tour with U2 and were unable to attend the show’s first previews, when it began performances November 28 at the Foxwoods Theatre. “[Bono] told us to never underestimate the magnificence of what we’re doing and that’s really special to hear from him,” Damiano said. “He’s the coolest and just so correct about everything. When he [offers a suggestion] you always just say, ‘Wow, you’re so right.’ Every song they’ve written is so different, but they all make sense as a unit when you put them together,” she said of the musical’s original rock score.

Interview : Robert Sheehan runs with 'Misfits' in 'Season of the Witch' while 'Killing Bono'

Robert Sheehan had something in common with Nicolas Cage before the two actors began filming the supernatural thriller "Season of the Witch": They both did not know how to ride horses, even though the movie required that they spend a considerable amount of time on horseback. So Sheehan, like Cage, learned how to ride horses as part of their training for "Season of the Witch," a tale about a group of 14th century men who have the responsibility to transport an accused witch (played by Claire Foy) to a distant abbey to stand trial Cage plays Behmen, a former Crusader, who is the leader of the group. Sheehan is Kay, an eager young man who aspires to become a knight.
"Season of the Witch" is just one of several films that Irish actor Sheehan has been doing in addition to appearing in numerous TV programs. He is currently co-starring in the BAFTA-winning sci-fi TV series "Misfits," which is about a group of young delinquents who have superpowers. After "Season of the Witch," Sheehan’s next movie is the comedy "Killing Bono" (based on music journalist Neil McCormick’s memoir of the same title), which shows how Neil (played by Ben Barnes) and his younger brother, Ivan (played by Sheehan), were in a band together and, in their failed attempts to become rock stars, were overshadowed by four of their former school mates who went on to become the superstar band U2.
While Sheehan was in New York City to promote "Season of the Witch," I sat down with him for this exclusive interview. While chatting over tea at the Ritz-Carlton lounge in midtown Manhattan, Sheehan opened up about his hilarious experiences while filming "Season of the Witch," which superpower he would want the most in real life, and his fond memories of his "Killing Bono" co-star Pete Postlethwaite, who died of cancer just two days before this interview.

U2.COM : 'U2 were up in the clouds...'

Ever since anyone can remember, Irish  rock journalist and broadcaster Dave Fanning has been the first person to air the first single from a new U2 album.

Dave has been friends with the band since their earliest days even though, when he first saw them play, ‘there were 5 or 6 other bands that I much preferred’. But, he recalls, ‘they had a belief in their own ability that none of the other crowd had.’

With the publication of his memoir, ‘The Thing Is…’ we tracked Dave down to ask him about the waning power of the DJ, how music has changed and some of his most memorable interviews. (In Part II, coming in a few days, Dave talks in more detail about his relationship with U2)

U2 Coming Back To Boston?

As ZLX continues its push to bring U2 to Boston, fresh rumors have surfaced due to an interesting upcoming summer schedule.
A recent article in the Boston Herald reported that the Red Sox applied for a permit to hold concerts on June 11 and 12, when the team is out of town to play in Toronto.
The article suggests that the permit is intended for the New Kids on the Block/Backstreet Boys summer tour, but the boy bands have already booked shows in other cities for those dates…So you can exhale now.
U2 not only has June 11 and 12 free, but they have ten days between shows in Oakland and Anaheim free to do whatever.
Maybe it means they’ll just be going on vacation, or maybe it means they’re planning something big for us at Fenway!
Perhaps our Facebook campaign to bring U2 to Boston is starting catch on…Hey, it’s the least they can do for Carter Alan!

Bono and The Edge to Attend All Remaining ‘Spider-Man’ Previews

After a series of accidents and injuries on the set of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, U2’s Bono and The Edge will be attending all of the remaining preview performances the Broadway musical. The duo, who wrote all of the music for the production, will join director Julie Taymor in fine-tuning the show for its new official opening on February 7.
There are some rumors going around that the two will be focused on reworking some of the show’s songs, and collaborating with Taymor on streamlining its second act.
This will be the songwriters’ first time witnessing the full production, as they have been tied up in touring with U2 and other commitments since previews for the show began in November. This may have been for the best, as it means they were spared the various mishaps that have plagued the superhero musical. Hopefully they will emerge from these shows unscathed.

U2 - All In The Light (early demo)

Unknown performance of New Year’s Day!!!

How perfect that I discovered this video yesterday … on January 1st? It’s a studio “performance” of “New Year’s Day” — but the band is just playing along to the album version, so it’s not really a live performance. The YouTube description & comments indicate that it’s from French TV, but I don’t know when or where. And in the first edition of U2-A Diary, there’s no mention of a French TV documentary/appearance.
So … anyone know anything about this?
