U2 to play Baltimore in June
U2 will play at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on June 22, according to sources familiar with the concert.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is expected to make the official announcement Monday morning on 98 Rock.
The concert is part of the Irish rock band's 2011 360° North American tour.
To date, other announced stops on the tour include Denver, Pittsburgh, Miami, Seattle and Chicago.
The on-sale date for tickets to the Baltimore show is still unclear. Tickets to the shows already announced range from $38 to as much as $277. Live Nation is the tour's promoter.
U2 came close to playing Baltimore in September 2009 as one of its 16 North American tour stops but had conflicts from the Baltimore Ravens' schedule. The band went on to play FexEx Field in Landover.
The upcoming June concert, expected to be one of the largest to ever play at M&T Bank Stadium, is the latest push by the Baltimore Ravens to bring outside events to the 12-year-old venue.
In August, the stadium hosted it's second international soccer game in as many years. On Labor Day, the University of Maryland and Naval Academy squared off at the state-owned venue in the kick off of their 2010 football seasons.

Bono has no hard feelings after coming last in final of Irish greats
Bono has said he has no hard feelings about losing out on the title of Ireland's Greatest, insisting he is fine with the snub.
2FM star Dave Fanning, inset, who championed the singer in the RTE show claims that neither he nor Bono were in the least upset when the U2 rock star came last in the poll.
"I wasn't upset at all and neither was Bono," Dave told the Herald. "I was talking to him during the week and he's fine about it."

More seats for Cape Town U2 concert
Johannesburg - Temporary extra seating may be added to Cape Town stadium to accommodate more people for the U2 concert in February, organiser Big Concerts said on Friday.
"We are considering installing temporary seating on the upper tiers of the stadium similar to what was utilised during the soccer world cup," the company's CFO Justin Van Wyk told Sapa in a telephone interview.
"This is a very complicated and technical engineering process as we would have to remove the facade on the outside to allow cranes to pack seats up there."
Van Wyk said many logistical issues needed to be sorted out, and the engineers used to design the stadium would have to be called in for a professional opinion.
"The extra seats are not a definite thing yet... it looks likely, but we are not ready to commit at this stage."
If the organiser's plan was successful, about 6000 extra seats would be available for the concert on February 18 in Cape Town. Tickets were sold out on Friday.
Currently, a person would only be able to watch this concert if they purchased a limited number of tickets for stadium suites.
The Irish rock band would also be playing at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on February 13. A few tickets for this concert were still available.

New edition of 'U2 - A Diary' coming in 2011
I’m super-thrilled to announce that Omnibus Press will be publishing an updated, second edition of U2 – A Diary next year! This is all very much “hot off the press,” so I don’t have a ton of details yet, but here’s what I do know:
- We’re aiming to publish in mid-2011.
- The new edition will add three years of material: 2008 through 2010. (My deadline is end of January.)
- We’ll be asking U2 fans to contribute great photos for possible inclusion in the book, just as we did with the first edition.
- The second edition will include an addendum in the back with corrections and new entries that cover the 1950 to 2007 timeframe of the first book.

Burma court hears Suu Kyi appeal
The Supreme Court in Burma has heard a final appeal from lawyers for pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi against her house arrest.
Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the last two decades in some form of detention |
It stems from an incident last year when an American man swam uninvited to her lakeside home.
Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won the last election in 1990 but was never allowed to take power.
She has spent most of the time since then under some form of detention.
Lawyers for the Nobel laureate says that although they believe she will soon be released, they want to prove her innocence.
The appeal was heard by the Special Appellate Bench in the remote capital, Nay Pyi Taw. A decision is expected within two weeks. Two previous appeals have been rejected.
U2 tickets could be re-sold on open market
Organisers expect hundreds of U2 tickets to be re-sold on the open market after the Cape Town concert sold out.
The Irish rockers will be performing at Cape Town Stadium on 18 February next year. But organisers expect some tickets will change hands a couple of times prior to the performance.
Organisers said there is very little they can do if fans re-sell their tickets. About 63,000 tickets for the Mother City concert were snapped up in six days.
Big Concerts said some people make huge profits from die-hard fans desperate to secure a spot.
Organisers also indicated they are considering squeezing in additional seats. They have promised they will alert fans, should more tickets becoming available.

Oxfam activists celebrate campaigning successes with Bono and Bill Gates
Oxfam activist Jennifer Crago writes in celebration of campaigning successes after meeting some of the most influential people in development and activism.
[Jennifer attended the One campaign's launch of ‘Living Proof' with fellow activist Adizah Tejani.]
“Occasionally, and I am sure that any seasoned campaigner will sympathise, you feel like all of your efforts have been wasted. This week has been different; notably fantastic re-affirmation from George Osbourne that Britain is on track to deliver its promised 0.7% of Gross National Income as Oversees Development Aid by 2013, and also the launch of ONE’s ‘Living Proof’ with Bill and Melinda Gates at London’s Science Museum on Monday night. The two of us were fortunate enough to be invited to attend.

Adam Clayton & Michael Hoppen : How We Met
Michael Hoppen, 53, is one of the UK's leading photography dealers, having exhibited and sold the works of artists including Diane Arbus and Henri Cartier-Bresson. He has been the director of Chelsea's Michael Hoppen Gallery since 1993. He lives in west London.
I first met Adam around 10 years ago. We had a show of Jacques Henri Lartigue, one of the great French photographers: Adam purchased a wonderful picture by him, which shows the 20th century appearing in the shape of a car on the left and the 19th century disappearing in the shape of a horse and carriage on the right. It's an important moment in photographic history, and it was quite surprising that he came in and knew exactly what he wanted.

U2 tickets nearly sold out
Tickets to U2’s two concerts in South Africa have all but sold out only hours after going on sale.
The band will play at the FNB and Cape Town stadiums in February as part of their 360° Tour. It will be their first visit to South Africa since their PopMart Tour in 1998.
Tickets ranging from R161 to a special Red Zone at R2 568 went on sale yesterday at 9am.
By 7am Computicket reported having 17 000 users camping on the website. At 9am the website crashed from the surge of hopeful buyers, said Big Concerts chief financial officer Justin van Wyk.
But within 25 minutes of the website coming back up, more than 25 percent of the tickets had been sold.
The FNB Stadium in Gauteng can accommodate close to 100 000 ticket holders while Cape Town Stadium can hold almost 70 000 fans.
The website continued to crash sporadically throughout the day, and giving users the number of a national call centre.
Twitter was busy with tweets about snaking queues and lagging ticket servers.
“Good news! After four hours I finally got the tickets – over the phone. Lank excited for February 13!” tweeted one user.
Van Wyk said: “It’s gone phenomenally well.
“The volume we’ve received has been unprecedented.”
He promised concertgoers would experience the full show.
Yesterday he said: “We expect to close at about 95 percent and sell the rest today.” - Sunday Argus

U2′s Edge, Sam Moore, NeYo, Josh Groban Help Raise $3.4 Mil for Cancer Research
Denise Rich started having her annual Angel Ball back in 1999–and it was wild. Those with long memories will recall the party for 1500 people at the Sheraton in midtown. The computer lists for seating were lost. Geraldo Rivera took the mic on the stage and instructed everyone–including hundreds of A listers– to sit wherever they happened to be standing. The room included everyone from Goldie Hawn to Bill Clinton to Fergie and Milton Berle–who did the funniest 15 minute set ever. He was over 90.
Flashforward ten years: on Thursday night Denise filled 55 Wall Street aka Cipriani Wall Street. She raised $3.4 million more for cancer research and her Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation, named for her late daughter. And she had plenty of help: she honored U2 guitarist extraordinaire the Edge and his wife Morleigh whose young daughter has miraculously survived leukemia.
And the Edge paid back by jumping on stage with soul legend Sam Moore for a rave up on Ben E. King‘s “Stand by Me” that people are still talking about. This was right after Moore tore down the house with his classic, “When Something is Wrong with My Baby.” Then comedian Chris Tucker jumped on stage to dance, spin, and jump during a “Soul Man” that brought everyone on the dance floor. By the time The Edge had strapped on his guitar, Cipriani was rockin’ as never before.
There were some other performers, too, whom you might have heard of: Josh Groban played the piano, and sang a couple of arias; singer Shontelle sang her top 40 hit, and then Ne Yo, the R&Bsensation of the 2000s, wowed the crowd with songs from his new album next month.
All these people had a lot of heavyweights to impress including Clive Davis, Rosie Perez, Petra Nemcova, Vera Wang, Russell Simmons, Anthony Kennedy Shriver, and “Survivor” winner Ethan Zohn who spoke movingly about surviving something else–cancer. Cipriani’s was also decorated in pieces by famed artist Romero Britto.
The Edge, meanwhile, turned out to be a godsend: not only did he play with Sam Moore, but two different people bid $80,000 apiece to get a backstage tour of a U2 concert with him.

Thousands of South African U2 fans were stuck in queues waiting for concert tickets around the country yesterday.
The Irish group, famous for hit songs such as the 2000 single Stuck In A Moment, will perform in February next year in Cape Town and Johannesburg as part of their U2 360° world tour.
Fans queued to get tickets at Computicket outlets nation-wide while scores of others bombarded the company's website when sales opened at 9am yesterday.
Big Concerts managing director Attie van Wyk said 70000 tickets were sold in the first 90minutes after sales opened: 40000 in Johannesburg (where 101000 tickets were made available at Soccer City stadium) and 30000 in Cape Town (with a stadium capacity of 70000).
"We're really surprised that the system coped well enough to process this many sales in such a short time," said Van Wyk.
"This hysteria is amazing. I believe the frenzy isn't just about U2, it's about the whole experience. This tour is going to be a circus. I mean, 120 trucks just to transport the concert's equipment."
Van Wyk said the Joburg concert would be the largest in U2's world tour, with Mexico City clinching second place with a capacity of 99000. Tickets cost between R161 and R696.
Warren Coetzer, from Melkbosstrand in Cape Town, queued for two hours to buy four tickets. "I'm a huge fan and I'm very relieved to have the tickets," he said.

U2 kills Computicket website
U2 tickets went on sale online at 09:00 today, but the Computicket.co.za message is not very encouraging
The news that U2 is set to rock South Africa in February got many fans excited, and Big Concerts announced that tickets will go on sale at Computicket from 09h00 on Saturday, October 23.
The Saturday date was most likely selected to minimize the amount of people which may use the online service as far less people have access to the Internet at home than at work. Computicket’s site has previously shown to be battling with high loads, but the Saturday start date did not solve the problem.
Numerous U2 fans which tried to access to Computicket site this morning were greeted with the message: “Please try again later or contact our Call Centre on 083 915 8000 (calls charged from R2.85 per minute) or 011 340 8000 or visit any of the Computicket Stores.”
One would assume the Computicket website could not handle to flood of people trying to get their hands on tickets.
Big Concerts’ financial director Justin van Wyk is quoted by Eyewitness news as saying that “in the first 20 – 25 minutes we sold about 25 percent of the inventory.”

Edge Honored at 2010 Angel Ball
Edge and Morleigh were honored Thursday night at the 2010 Angel Ball in New York City. It's a fundraiser for Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research, the same organization which put on the recent tour-Underworld-with-Edge auction that we mentioned earlier this week. There's not a ton of U2/Edge-related content, but you can read a recap of the event on the Wall Street Journal's web site.

Madonna to visit Malawi with U2's Bono
UPDATE : PROBABLY WRONG INFORMATION ABOUT BONO JOINING. WHEN IT'S 100% VERIFIED, THE POST WILL BE REMOVED ASAP.
Lilongwe- Pop diva Madonna is planning to return to Malawi next week in the company of fellow star Bono.
The material Girl makes it a point to visiit the southern African state at least twice a year to supervise her 9m GBP Raising Malawi Academy for Girls as well as visit the six orphanages she is funding.
A source close to Madonna's initiatives said while last time she was in the company of UN economist Professor Jeofrey Sachs, this time around she cames with Irish Band U2 leader and superstar Bono.
'Bono will join Madonna in Malawi,' said the source.
Bono has previously visited Malawi. In January 2002 the star joined the then Harvard University development economist Prof. Jeffrey Sachs to lobby southern African leaders to use debt relief to fight poverty and AIDS.
'Bono is a big admirer of Madonna's work in Malawi.
This time he wants to join Madonna to Malawi to see what Madonna is doing.'
Madonna adopted two children from the country.
'He wants to visit all the dusty villages that Madonna goes to. He complains that the first time he came here in 2002 he was only taken to the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe,' said the Raising Malawi source.
On the visit Madonna is also planning a family reunion for her adopted children with their biological parents.

Getting lost in No.10 all part of Bono's gig
WHEN asked to recall some of his life's stranger moments, Bono doesn't have to think too long before nominating a tipsy night at 10 Downing Street.
The U2 frontman and activist had already held meetings with the then prime minister, Tony Blair, but they were often stuffy and earnest. So it was decided that dinner and drinks at No 10 could break the ice.
The night went well and Bono indulged in "a few" glasses of wine. At midnight, Blair asked to be excused to take an emergency phone call. Bono was politely asked to let himself out.

PRINCE and rock kings U2 have signed up to top the bill
GLASTONBURY 2011 is lining up to be a real royal affair.
COLDPLAY are likely to fill the third headline slot too, with the final details being thrashed out. The festival isn't for another eight months but founder MICHAEL EAVIS has clearly been grafting hard masterminding the best music event in years.

Michael getting that line-up arranged has got me looking forward to next summer already.
Seven-time Grammy winner Prince is one of the best performers of all time but rarely graces these shores.
U2 - Super-sized footprint
The idea for U2 360° came at the end of the band's last visit to Australia, in 2006.
''Bono walked into a meeting and asked if he could play in the round next time,'' production manager Jake Berry recalls. ''I said, 'Of course you can.'''
Designer Willie Williams, who has worked with U2 since 1982, set to work with architect Mark Fisher. ''I didn't expect to have such a concrete idea. But an idea dropped into my head about the 360° concept.''

Full interview by Bono - Progress killed the radio stars
U2 remain the world's biggest rock band but Bono tells Andrew Murfett they just want to be back on the airwaves.
U2 WANT to get back on the radio. While the 5 million sales of their 12th album, last year's No Line on the Horizon, is nothing to sniff at, and the album earned the band their best reviews, it failed to generate what their luminous frontman Bono deems the key element of pop — a hit single.
In December, his band will bring the ludicrously ambitious U2 360° Tour — the largest rock show of all time — to Australia.
The numbers behind the show are mind-boggling. The tour costs about $750,000 a day to run; its stage, which weighs 390 tonnes, requires two 50-tonne cranes, 180 trucks and six chartered cargo-only 747s to transport it.

Interpol's Daniel Kessler Talks About Opening for U2
You guys were supposed to open for U2 this summer before Bono's back injury meant cancelling a slew of dates. How did that affect you?
The U2 dates that were postponed was due to someone's injury so there was nothing we could do about that, and we had to shuffle our schedules and toured around the East Coast...in hindsight it was a great way to prepare for our new record.
But we just finished a few dates with U2 in Europe--and they were great. Their fans were really receptive and enthusiastic. You never know what it's like when you open for someone else's audience, and we'd seldomly done that in our career. So at the same time it was exciting and new--keeping us on our toes. It was a lot of fun.
Were you big U2 fans growing up?
That band has been a consistent mark in modern music for over 30 years; it's extraordinary what they've got going on. Night after night they've had stadiums of people all over the place going bananas.
I'd seldom been to a stadium show but I have to say, seeing these ones where there were an upward of 70 to 90 thousand people going crazy for four people on stage is pretty exciting to be around. That energy is amazing to be around. And yeah, Unforgettable Fire was one of the first records I bought on my own, when I was eight. I've been around U2 music for the best part of my life.

'I was in grave danger': Bono
Emergency surgery in which he faced being paralysed has led the world's most famous rock star into a spurt of creativity.
Bono, who is bringing his band U2's behemothic stadium show U2360 to Australia in early December, entered surgery in Munich last May, unsure if we would walk again.

Countdown to Burma’s Elections - Amnesty International
In three short weeks, Myanmar (formally Burma) will hold its first national elections in two decades. Regretfully, the polls will be overshadowed by a backdrop of political repression and fear.
Many of Myanmar’s 50 million people live in poverty and suffer from ongoing human rights violations. Those who express dissenting views face harassment, arbitrary arrest, torture, imprisonment and sometimes even executions. And political prisoners now number over 2,200.
When elections were last held in 1990, the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won a resounding victory, but the military government ignored the election results and arrested scores of opposition activists. This has haunted the government both domestically and internationally ever since.
With new elections, Myanmar had an opportunity to place the 1990 elections firmly behind them. However the new election has already been tainted as in June political parties were banned from undertaking campaigning activities that could “harm security, the rule of law and community peace”. This provision is so broad that it allows for the criminalization of peaceful political activity.
For decades, the government has used vaguely worded security laws to suppress peaceful political dissent and there is a real fear that activists, especially those from ethnic minorities and the NLD, which is boycotting the elections, will come under increased repression as the election approaches.
Myanmar’s government must halt its repression of activists. The people of Myanmar must be allowed to exercise their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association throughout the election period and beyond.
Join us in using this opportunity to call for the immediate release of all prisoners of conscience in Myanmar.

The Sense of Ireland (1980)
The inaugural Sense of Ireland festival in London in 1980 featured over 90 events in Irish music, theatre, literature, the visual arts, film, crafts, dance, photography, architecture and archeology. The Sounds Of Ireland was the festival’s music showcase featuring the cream of the crop of the island’s punk and new wave bands as well as the legendary Rory Gallagher.
The following two pictures are quite well-known and have been available online for years. However, the third one is a bit of a gem. I found it while flicking through the Hot Press’ ‘U2 File’ (1985). This is first time it has been put up online. The picture was taken by Colm Henry (I suspect he took the second shot as well) and shows the lead singers of five of the most important Dublin New Wave bands.

U2 JHB concert expected to break records
Concert organisers are expecting record-breaking figures for the South African leg of U2’s 360 Degree tour.
Tickets for the two shows in South Africa, one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town, will go on sale this weekend.
Cape Town Stadium can hold 55,000 people while the FNB Stadium, where U2 will perform on 13 February, can hold more than 100,000 people standing.
This would make it the country’s single biggest show ever, pipping Robbie Williams who performed to 60,000 people at Loftus in Pretoria in 2006.
According to organisers, it would also make it U2’s biggest concert surpassing the 96,000 people the super group performed to in California last year.
Computicket will sell tickets from 9am on Saturday for U2’s first show in South Africa since they toured the country in 1998.

Organizer: No Glastonbury festival in 2012
LONDON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Britain's Glastonbury 2012 music festival has been canceled due to a shortage of portable toilets and police caused by the London Olympics, its organizer said.
Organizer Michael Eavis said he was told not a single police officer would be available for the event, The Sunday Telegraph reported.
"Avon and Somerset told us no police officers will be available as they will all be at the Olympics, and we only own half the loos (portable toilets) we actually need every year," Eavis said.
The event traditionally takes place at the end of June, but Eavis said it skips a year every fifth or sixth year, so canceling the 2012 event "seemed sensible."
The 2011 festival, with U2 as the projected headliner, sold out within hours. The festival traditionally attracts about 130,000 attendees.
Eavis, who just turned 76, said he will take a vacation in 2012 and might attended the London Olympics.
About 9,000 police officers will be on duty every day during the Olympics, the report said.

U2 last played the city in 1997 as part of its PopMart tour. Winnipeg wasn’t initially included when the 360° Tour was announced last year, but the 2010 North American leg was postponed after frontman Bono suffered a back injury and underwent surgery in May.
The tour, in support of the group’s 2009 album No Line on the Horizon, is named after the giant four-legged, 164 foot-tall stage structure known as "The Claw," which has set the world record for the largest concert stage of all time.

U2 to release new album in 'early 2011'
U2 WILL have a new album out early in the new year, the band’s manager Paul McGuinness has said. McGuinness said the band has already debuted several of the songs live, including Mercy, Every Breaking Wave, and Boys Fall from the Sky . The album has been provisionally titled Songs of Ascent.
“I would expect a new U2 album sooner than anybody thinks. I would guess early 2011 before the next leg of the American tour which starts in May,” he said.
McGuinness defended sales figures for U2’s last album No Line on the Horizon , which he said had held up “remarkably well” despite the perception that the record had been a flop.
It sold “roughly” five million copies, while its 2004 predecessor How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb had sold twice that number.
He said record sales across the industry had declined by half because of illegal downloading.
McGuinness accused internet service providers such as UPC of being “utterly disingenuous” in stating that they could not be responsible for the behaviour of their customers.

Artist rediscovers photos thought lost to history
Phil & Rory, Punchestown Racecourse '82 |
THE only known photograph of late rock stars Phil Lynott and Rory Gallagher performing together has been re-discovered after 28 years.
The image, taken at an open-air concert at Punchestown Racecourse in July 1982, was only unearthed two weeks ago by photographer Colm Henry.
Once Ireland's top rock photographer, the Meath man spent the 1980s photographing some of the biggest names in music, both at home and abroad, and is now rediscovering these images as he trawls his huge archives for a new gallery.
Bono & Larry, Rome '89 |
"I still have the negatives but many of my proof sheets are gone. In the case of the picture of Phil Lynott and Rory Gallagher together in 1982, I found it in a file of Phil Lynott images from 1986."
Doe-eyed
"Thin Lizzy weren't even playing at that concert. Phil Lynott just turned up and decided to get onstage with Rory. It's not like Oxegen now. Things were a lot looser back then and that could happen," Mr Henry said.

U2 manager criticises UPC defence
U2 manager Paul McGuinness today rejected UPC's defence in relation to the issue of illegal downloading as "disingenuous".
Mr McGuinness, one of the music industry's most vocal critics of illegal downloading, said internet service providers (ISPs) such as UPC were being "utterly disingenuous" in stating that they were "mere conduits" and could not be responsible for the behaviour of their customers.
The record industry lost a High Court case earlier this week in which it sought an injunction against UPC to force it to deal with illegal filesharers.

Taylor Swift Would 'Wait In Line' To Meet Bono, Bruce Springsteen
For some guys, meeting Taylor Swift is on their bucket list of life goals — yes, we're talking about you, "Buried Life" guys. But for Swift, she puts two music legends on her wish list of people to meet, and they're both guys any music lover would die to meet.
"There's so many people I look up to based on their longevity and based on the fact that they've maintained such a culturally relevant career and such a musically relevant career," she told MTV News when she sat down to talk about her new album, Speak Now, due October 25. "People that I look up to like that are Bruce Springsteen and Bono. And I know those are really tough meet-and-greets to get into. And I know that, but I really want to at least try. I would wait in line for that."
Not that Swift hasn't already been lucky enough to meet and work with everyone from John Mayer and Miley Cyrus to T-Pain and Stevie Nicks. But on Speak Now, it will be all about Swift and the people in her life who helped inspire the tracks, including this week's release, "Back to December."

U2 South African shows confirmed!
U2 are definitely performing in South Africa in February 2011, we can exclusively reveal.
When we initially broke the news at the beginning of September, sparking widespread rumours across the country, record company and concert promoter representatives dismissed the report as speculative.
Now three additional well-placed sources have confirmed that the Irish supergroup are set to perform two shows in South Africa as part of their 360 Degrees world tour. Singer Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. are believed to be touching down at Soccer City in Johannesburg on 13 February and Cape Town Stadium on 19 February 2011.
The official tour announcement is expected to be made within the next week, with ticket sales to open shortly thereafter.
